Letterpress Week:

I thought I would start the year off by doing something a little different with the blog. I have decided to introduce theme or topic weeks. Now every week won't have a theme/topic, but a lot will and I think it will make it easier for me when decided what to showcase or write about. I will be posting an upcoming schedule so if you want to submit something you'll know what's coming up. I thought what better way to kick it all of then with one of my favorite things "LETTERPRESS!" Not only do I enjoy running my letterpress machine, but I really appreciate all that goes into the process and love picking up awesome letterpress items from other talented printers.

So what is letterpress? Per Wikipedia: it is relief printing of text and image using a press with a "type-high bed" printing press and movable type, in which a reversed, raised surface is inked and then pressed into a sheet of paper to obtain a positive right-reading image. It also goes on to say that, "A small amount of high-quality art and hobby letterpress printing remains—fine Letterpress work is crisper than offset litho because of its impression into the paper, giving greater visual definition to the type and artwork. Today, many of these small Letterpress shops survive by printing fine editions of books or by printing upscale invitations and stationery."

If you take a quick tour on websites like etsy.com and feltandwire.com you will be amazed at some of the unique items that printers are producing and a lot of them, like me, are doing this in home based studios. This week I'll showcase some of the printers that I respect/envy. I'll also revisit a fun interview I did with a talented female letterpress printer. Stay Tuned.
